The Secret Is In The Dirt . . . Ben Hogan.

“I have known Bill since 1982 when I was a collegiate player, and he is one of two instructors I relied on while playing on the PGA Tour. He is a highly skilled instructor and has a wonderful way with people. Each time after working with Bill I always walked away feeling better about my game. I have seen Bill help golfers of all skill levels.”

I am not a method teacher, I work with the students physical attributes along with the skill set of the individual.

What is the most rewarding part of being a golf instructor?

It truly depends on the individual, if it is a beginner, regularly making solid contact to get the ball air-born. If it is tour player watching them compete and ultimately win at the highest level.

What has been your greatest accomplishment as a golf instructor?

Honestly there are many, from helping a handicapped older woman become a frequent golfer to sharing in the celebration of a player’s win on the PGA Tour.

What level of skill do you enjoy working with the greatest?

All skill sets present their own set of challenges for a teacher, so they are all rewarding when those challenges are met with success.

Student | Player Testimonials

“Swing instruction is all about communication skills, especially with young elite amateur players. His ability to share and emphasize the importance of fundamentals in the golf swing was a key reason that I asked him to become a volunteer instructor for my teams. Bill has the patience necessary to work with the talented player while keeping things simple for the less experienced one. In addition to working with the golf swing, he has a keen perspective on how to teach course management skills. Teaching how to set up a shot, a hole, or a round varies based on the skill level of the player. This is something that Bill has always been able to do given his knowledge of the student he is instructing and the experience he has teaching so many outstanding players. Bill Dowling is simply an outstanding instructor who combines knowledge, experience and love of the game when teaching.”

Gregg Grost

Retired Golf Coach, University of Oklahoma and Lamar University, Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), Hall of Fame Member – CEO Emeritus, GCAA

“When you make a living playing golf it is important to have someone who knows what they are doing, that’s why Bill was my instructor. Bill is a real student of the game and has kept his teaching skills current. He is both proficient in the technical skills and the mental skills of the golf game. I would say the most important thing that I learnt from Bill regarding my coaching is how much he cares.”

Philip Jonas

Saskatoon Golf & Country Club Pro – Golf Hall of Fame of British Columbia – 2012 PGA BC Teacher of the Year – 2003, 2004, 2007 & 2017 PGA BC Player of the Year – 2021 & 2022 PGA Saskatchewan Player of the Year – Former PGA Tour Player – 1996 & 1997 Peru Open Champion.

“Bill has a solid and tenured record of instruction that encompasses from the beginner to the professionals on the PGA Tour. He is most capable of working and helping all that seek to improve their game. To name a couple of students who greatly benefited from Bill’s instruction are Billy Ray Brown who won the individual title at the NCAA National Championship as a Freshman, and then went on to be a winner on the PGA Tour. Another player that Bill developed through college and onto the PGA Tour is Trevor Dodds who successfully played for several years. I personally entrusted my son’s game to Bill when he was a high school player wanting to play college golf. Bill was instrumental in helping him achieve success that he was awarded with a scholarship to a Division One University.”

“I have had the opportunity to see Bill’s teaching prowess in action from several different viewpoints. My first interaction with Bill and his reach as a Golf Instructor was seeing my teammates and former Players at Lamar University make the drive to Houston to have him work with them on their games. Trevor Dodds, John Riegger, and Philip Jonas all were touring professionals, as well as many players from Lamar that were able to gain invaluable knowledge and enhance their skills under Bill’s guidance. I also had the opportunity to have Bill help me with my own golf game in the late 80’s while playing golf for The University of Oklahoma. I was not going to be a touring professional, but he helped me become an All-America selection in 1989 while I was a member of our 1989 National Championship golf team.” “We have come full circle in recent years, as my wife and I have a son who is chasing a golf dream. He had outgrown my ability to help him and was needing guidance in his golf game. I have a lot of contacts in the industry, but Bill was the one who I sought out to help my son Ryan. This was not an easy task, as Ryan had to drive over 5 hours to spend time with Bill. After their first day working together, Ryan won his first big Junior Golf tournament. That is a real testament to Bill, as Ryan’s scoring average dropped over three strokes per round just after that first lesson.”

Closer to 81 than I am to 80 years old,

I have played golf since I was 12 years old and primarily self-taught, however, I have had numerous lessons over the years from some notable teachers.  I quit playing golf in 2003 after playing 3 to 4 times per week for many years.  During that time I was a single digit handicap player. I am now closer to 81 than I am to 80 years old, and decided I wanted to get back into the game.  I called on Bill for a lesson.  I wish I could say that I hit the ball as long as I used to but after all age does catch up with us.  In one lesson, Bill had me hitting the ball at the target with reasonable club head speed.  I am looking forward to his continued teaching improving my game to where I can go play with any group of guys again.  I highly recommend him and his teaching method. He takes your individual type of swing and helps you to improve that swing. He does not try to rebuild your swing but he does get it to the level of playing golf for the enjoyment of the game.  It is really nice to have someone who can watch your swing and determine fixes quickly. That does not happen often.

Working with you is great! You have not only helped me, but my wife and Son too. Put simply, you are a wonderful coach! Your teaching style is very inspirational and encouraging, which makes it fun to work with you. After not playing golf for over a decade my game was in need of a lot of work. Since working with you, my swing has improved, my tempo is better, and I’m learning how to discern why I hit a bad shot when I do so I can make corrections. You have helped me to reignite my passion for the game. Last month I had my best round in over 20 years. I look forward to our lessons each week. I am seeing the progress we are making from week to week in addition to my practice and playing between lessons.  If someone wants to improve their game, have fun, and reduce their handicap they would be wise to hire you as their coach. I highly recommend you to friends, family, and colleagues. Looking forward to our continued success together Bill!

Sincerely,
